Within the first season, eight episodes unpacked the story of the Black female experience from the perspective of two female protagonists, Issa (Issa Rae) and Molly (Yvonne Orji), who have been best friends with each other since their college days at Stanford.[23] Both in their late 20s, they navigate career and relationship experiences while living in their hometown of South Los Angeles, California.[24] The two share a close bond, and throughout the show, they deal with internal struggles, their friendship and the African American community.[13] Issa works at a non-profit that benefits middle-school aged students of color called \"We Got Y'all\". She struggles to reignite the passion in her relationship with her long-term boyfriend, Lawrence (Jay Ellis), who has been slacking in their relationship since his start-up company failed.[25] Molly is a corporate attorney who has career success but difficulty with dating men. The half-hour series explores social and racial issues that relate to the contemporary American experience.[26]
The soundtrack for the series is overseen by Rae, music supervisor Kier Lehmann and musician Raphael Saadiq.[75][76] The soundtrack often uses modern alternative R&B artists.[75] Compilations of songs used in the show have been released with each season.[76] Several artists, such as Goldlink, Sampha, and The Internet, have experienced commercial success after being featured on the show.[76] The success of the lead to Rae establishing her own record label, Raedio, in partnership with Atlantic Records and a publishing deal with Kobalt Music Group.[77]

Lawrence called Issa earlier in the season finale episode and expressed his desire to fix their broken relationship. But apparently, at the last minute, he decided that he didn't want to work things out after all and was last seen on season one pounding away at the backside of the bank teller Tasha (Dominique Perry), who had been incredibly flirty towards Lawrence all season long.
In an earlier interview with Newsweek, Rae said time would jump ahead a few months after Issa and Lawrence's breakup in the season two premiere. She wouldn't say whether or not the duo would end up back together, but from the looks of the season two previews, it seems as if Issa will be diving into single girl life feet-first with the help of her best friend Molly (Yvonne Orji) while Lawrence appears to be mulling over various aspects of his former relationship in clips.
Now Rae is one of the most sought-out names in Hollywood. The 33-year-old writes, produces, and stars in HBO's Insecure, which was picked up for a third season last year. She's also signed on to develop three more projects for the network. Her first major film role, for the screen adaptation of the young adult novel The Hate U Give, is currently in production. And last fall, she became the new face of CoverGirl makeup.
I got completely out of debt the second season of Awkward Black Girl. It was the second time I was able to be debt free. The first time an aunt had passed, and bless her heart, she had left us an inheritance. I used that money to get myself out of debt, and made a vow to myself to never be crippled by debt ever again. So when I ran up a few cards again, I was devastated. This time I knew it was for real.
The most mature moment of the series came at the beginning of this final season, when Issa admitted to herself and Lawrence that she wasn't in a place to both be in a relationship with him and deal with his new co-parenting-with-Condola situation. It was as if she was finally choosing herself and doing what felt right, even if it wasn't the easy choice to make. Had the rest of the season kept that momentum going, it would've bucked the rom-com-y trend of most sitcoms and made for a satisfying six-episode coda to Season 4.
Original soundtrack to the HBO original comedy-drama series featuring tracks from Issa Rae, SZA, Bryson Tiller, Jazmine Sullivan and others. Insecure is based partially on Issa Rae's widely lauded web series Awkward Black Girl. The series premiered on October 9, 2016. Since it's release, the show has gone on to receive critical acclaim. The second season premiered on July 23, 2017.
After all, it's another season of Insecure! And we've waited much too long for it to come back. On the other hand, it's the final season of Insecure, which means our lives will be filled with a lot less Issa and her hilarious bathroom gas-ups.
These early days' Issa look was the one that made us fall in love. It comes straight from Season 1 when Issa was a whole lot more awkward and insecure and even despite the fact that she was sporting a cute crop.
Now, bringing it to season five, Lawrence is lucky to not have replaced Dro for the last spot. Lawrence is dealing with the \"good Black man\" complex, where he believes that his attempt to show up means he deserves praise.
During season five, we see Derek step in to diffuse an argument between Lawrence and Condola (Christina Elmore) that quickly heated up at his daughter's birthday party. Derek pulled Lawrence away and allowed him to vent a bit and gave him genuine advice about coparenting.
It'll be interesting to see where Molly is taken with her new job, considering that the last season emphasized her work life. Issa's work at We Got Y'all is also driving itself to the point of repetition, but with her new Lyft job, there's hope for her to move out of that bubble.
What the show managed to achieve was something quietly brilliant. It took the character of Issa and across every season saw her grow into different places. Looking back on the opening scene in the first episode of the series, it is remarkable to see how far she has come. What worked as a hilarious hook where she was roasted by a group of students also worked as an excellent entry point to her character and where she was at in life. When seen alongside the finale, the beauty with which the pieces all fit together is inescapable.
This beauty was not an easy feat. The show took some big, audacious swings over the course of its run. When we first meet Issa in Season 1, she is feeling increasingly disillusioned from her job and her relationship with her boyfriend, Lawrence (Jay Ellis). She soon cheats on him and subsequently tries to suppress her guilt by reinvesting in the relationship. However, Lawrence finds out and subsequently leaves her at the end of the season.
Molly drops Issa off and we all hold our breath in hope of a season finale that reunites the torn lovers. After all, Issa knows she made a mistake, she admitted it, and was willing to repair what she broke, even if the admission came because she got caught.
I know in my last recap I said that Issa needed to take a break from dudes, but this episode reminded me of how good things are when she and Daniel actually connect. I still don't want her to rush into a relationship with Daniel, but give me more episodes like this one and I probably won't be mad if they eventually end up together after Issa spends some time alone. I don't dislike Daniel (although I'm not sure I'll ever forgive him for his unannounced cum-shot last season) and I'm happy to see him vibe with Issa, but I don't want her to start sleeping in his bed any time soon. 59ce067264
